Israel confirms recovery of last hostage's remains from Gaza

On Monday, Israel announced the recovery and return of the remains of Staff Sgt. Ran Gvili, marking the end of the ordeal for the last Israeli hostage held in Gaza.

Ran Gvili, a 24-year-old officer with the Israel Police, fell during combat on October 7, 2023. Engaged in a confrontation with Hamas militants near Kibbutz Alumim, he was subsequently taken to Gaza, as detailed by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

“Ran, with his broad shoulders and radiant smile, was a person full of heart. A true companion loved by all. He cherished life, embodied profound values, communicated earnestly, and maintained a strong yet soothing presence,” the forum described.

Gvili’s memory lives on through his parents, Talik and Itzik, his brother Omri, his sister Shira, and an extended family who mourn his loss.

Supporters held placards with Gvili’s image during a rally in Tel Aviv on January 23, 2026, urging for his return. This demonstration honored the soldier who lost his life to Hamas militants on October 7, 2023, and whose body had been retained in Gaza since then. (AP Photo/Leo Correa)

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed, after a comprehensive identification process by the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, coordinated with police and military officials, that Gvili’s remains were identified. His family has been officially notified, and arrangements are underway for his burial.

The IDF expressed condolences to the family and said all hostages have now been returned from Gaza to Israel.
