In the early hours of Monday, a man was left in critical but stable condition following a shotgun shooting in Jacksonville Beach. The Jacksonville Beach Police Department reported that the incident occurred at close range.
Chief Gene Smith detailed that officers were dispatched to a residence on the 900 block of 4th Avenue around 12:16 a.m. They responded to reports of a shooting and discovered the victim on the ground outside the home, suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The officers on the scene promptly administered first aid to the man until paramedics arrived. He was then transported to Memorial Hospital for further treatment, according to police reports.
During their investigation, detectives questioned a man and a woman who were inside the house at the time of the incident. Chief Smith noted that both individuals were either uncooperative or claimed to have no knowledge of the events. Subsequently, the woman was released after being escorted to another location by officers, while the man was detained due to an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
Smith said the man had been shot once with a shotgun at “close range.” Officers immediately rendered aid to him until paramedics arrived and took him to Memorial Hospital, according to Smith.
Detectives reportedly interviewed a male and female who were found inside the home. Smith said both were “uncooperative and/or claimed they had no information.” The female was taken to another location by officers and released, Smith said, while the male was taken into custody for an outstanding arrest warrant.
Smith said detectives also served a search warrant on the home and found a shotgun.
According to Smith, the man who was found shot refused to give police his name and any information about what happened.
As of Tuesday, Jan. 27, JBPD said no further information is available at this time. The incident remains under active investigation.
