Firefighters injured in blazing car explosion in the Bronx: ‘It was a fireball,’ witness recounts

On Wednesday night, an explosive car fire in the Bronx left six firefighters injured, according to official reports.

Emergency teams hastened to the scene following an explosion at approximately 7:06 p.m. at the intersection of Westchester Ave. and Fox St. in the Longwood neighborhood, leaving bystanders in shock.

Frank Rojas, a 26-year-old Amazon delivery driver who witnessed the event, shared with the Daily News, “The fire ignited in the trash outside an apartment and spread beneath the vehicle.” He recounted, “The car erupted, and there were at least two explosive sounds.”

Rojas further explained, “The first blast came from the trash, followed by a second explosion from the car, turning it into a towering fireball.”

In addition to the initial vehicle, two other cars sustained damage, including a firetruck that was responding to the incident, Rojas added.

Authorities managed to bring the fire under control by 8:19 p.m.

It was unclear what sparked the explosion; an investigation is underway, officials said.

EMS transported the injured firefighters to Jacobi Hospital for evaluation, the FDNY said.

Three of the injured firefighters were in stable condition, cops said.
