PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLS) — On Saturday afternoon, a shooting incident erupted near several buildings at Brown University, leaving multiple individuals injured, according to local authorities. At present, no arrests have been made.
In response to the situation, Brown University has urged its community members to remain indoors as both university and Providence police actively search for the suspect or suspects involved.
Emergency medical teams are currently at the location, providing necessary aid to those affected.
The university reported that officials were notified of the shooting incident near the Barus & Holley Engineering building at approximately 4:22 p.m.
Following the incident, the university swiftly issued a BrownUAlert, advising students to take shelter and steer clear of the vicinity.
Initial communications from the university, as well as a social media post by President Donald Trump, mistakenly indicated that a suspect had been apprehended. However, this information was later corrected to confirm that no suspect is in custody.
A statement from the university said a report of a secondary shooting near Governor Street was unfounded.
The alerts directed students to “Lock doors, silence phones and stay stay hidden until further notice. Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself. Stay tuned for further safety information.”
Providence police confirmed that multiple people have been shot, but did not immediately provide further information on their injuries.
A statement from the school, reads, in part, “We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of multiple shooting victims, but we do not yet have information about their condition that we are in a position to share. They have been transported to local hospitals.”
Providence police instructed the public to shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
