WASHINGTON (AP) — California Republican Doug LaMalfa, a longstanding U.S. Representative with seven terms under his belt, has passed away at the age of 65, as announced by GOP officials on Tuesday.
His passing, which was confirmed by Majority Whip Tom Emmer and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson, further narrows the Republican majority in the House, leaving them with 218 seats compared to the Democrats’ 213.
The circumstances surrounding LaMalfa’s death remain undisclosed at this time.
“Doug was a principled conservative and a tireless advocate for the people of Northern California,” Hudson remarked. “He was never afraid to fight for rural communities, farmers, and working families. Doug brought grit, authenticity, and conviction to everything he did in public service.”
LaMalfa, who began his political career as a state lawmaker and was also known for his work as a rice farmer, first took office in Congress in 2012.
He was a familiar figure on the House floor, frequently supporting GOP leadership and sharing his perspectives on issues affecting both local and national communities.
C-SPAN in a recent compilation said he gave at least one set of remarks for the record on 81 days in 2025. Only two other lawmakers spoke on the House floor more frequently.
