Chicago immigration news: Local chefs unite for Todos Ponen to feed immigrant families facing food insecurity

CHICAGO — Amid the growing challenges faced by Latino families in Chicago due to increased immigration enforcement, a unique culinary initiative is stepping up to lend a helping hand.

On January 19, the historic Ramova Theater will host Todos Ponen: Una Noche De Pueblos Y Platillos, a citywide fundraising event dedicated to combating food insecurity and economic instability among immigrant households. With over 40 participating restaurants and support from various sectors, the event aims to draw hundreds of attendees and raise $100,000. The funds will provide essential groceries to 125 families for at least a month.

Founded in 2020 by Chef Diana Dávila and the team at Mi Tocaya, Todos Ponen was initially a response to the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on immigrant families, who found themselves without institutional support. The initiative began as emergency food relief but quickly highlighted broader systemic challenges. Today, as Latino communities in Chicago face the threat of deportations, heightened ICE activity, and financial instability, the situation has evolved into a long-term crisis. Many families are now struggling to secure basic necessities, including safe access to food.

Marcos Carbajal, the owner of Carnitas Uruapan, has also observed the repercussions of ICE activities in neighborhoods like Little Village, Gage Park, and Pilsen. His restaurants play a vital role in these communities by providing local employment. The challenges faced by families are evident in his workforce, dining areas, and the broader community. This firsthand experience made Carbajal an essential partner in the initiative, leading him to join Dávila as a co-host of Todos Ponen.

Dávila and Carbajal recently appeared on ABC7 Chicago to raise awareness about their efforts. Those interested in contributing can donate or purchase tickets to attend Todos Ponen.
