CHICAGO (WLS) — A third investigation has been opened into a Chicago police officer tied to the death of Officer Krystal Rivera.

The officer in question was Rivera’s partner. Investigators say he accidentally shot and killed her in the line of duty this year.

He’s also now under investigation for an alleged attack on an off-duty officer at a bar over the weekend.

The same officer is now accused of trying to gather any video evidence of that attack.

The Chicago Police Department announced on Thursday that it is currently investigating one of its officers for potentially interfering in an inquiry regarding an alleged assault he is accused of initiating on a sidewalk in Wicker Park on Sunday night.

Several surveillance cameras monitoring a busy section of North Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park might have recorded an alleged attack that took place late Sunday night involving an off-duty Chicago police officer and another individual outside the DSTRKT Bar and Grill.

The alleged attacker, mentioned in a police report submitted by the supposed female victim who is also a Chicago police officer, is the same officer responsible for accidentally shooting his partner, Officer Krystal Rivera, during a call earlier this summer.

ABC7 is not naming the officer because he’s not been charged with a crime in either incident.

A manager from a nearby business next to the bar revealed that he received a call from an employee on Wednesday afternoon, stating that a man had contacted the store seeking surveillance footage of the Sunday night incident.

This manager shared the caller ID with ABC7, showing the call was made at 3:01 p.m. on August 13, coinciding with the emergence of the alleged officer-on-officer incident.

ABC7 called the number, which went right to voicemail.

The last name and number on the ID match the name of the officer accused of physically attacking his female colleague Sunday

According to a police report acquired by ABC7 I-Team, the officer in question had asked her to delete videos she had recorded on her phone while inside the bar.

CPD says the male officer is currently on medical leave, and sources say that means he should be performing no duties related to investigations or any kind of police work.

As the I-Team reported last month, a 2024 disciplinary report from the Civilian Office of Police Accountability said the officer who shot and killed Officer Rivera had five previous complaints of misconduct where findings were sustained. The officer faced three suspensions and two reprimands in just four years with the department.

The manager said he told his employee to tell the caller he’d have to reach out to the store’s owner through official channels for any surveillance video.

The Chicago Police Department says that possible phone call is now also under investigation.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is now investigating the alleged attack outside the bar.
