Chicago police officer involved in deadly shooting of Derek Jordan on Homan Avenue in Humboldt Park relieved of powers, CPD says

A Chicago police officer has been stripped of their active duties following a fatal shooting incident in Humboldt Park last week, confirmed by the Chicago Police Department to ABC7.

The officer, currently under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) in relation to the shooting, has been reassigned to the department’s alternate response unit, according to a spokesperson for the CPD.

It remains uncertain whether the removal of the officer’s police powers is directly linked to the ongoing investigation.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, the deceased has been identified as Derek Jordan, a 42-year-old resident of Chicago.

COPA has stated that Jordan was inside a vehicle that was being sought in connection to an earlier shooting incident on the Eisenhower Expressway.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported from that expressway shooting, although it did cause significant traffic disruptions during the busy afternoon commute.

COPA said police were alerted to the white Mercedes being in the Humboldt Park neighborhood’s 800-block of North Homan Avenue, and an unmarked vehicle tried to engage the driver about 5:30 p.m.

The car drove away, hitting a pedestrian in the crosswalk in the process, officials said.

CPD followed the car through an alley; it then crashed into a CTA bus, according to COPA.

Police said the driver also hit an unmarked CPD squad car.

Witness video shared with ABC7 Chicago shows officers with guns drawn.

The car reversed. And, while driving toward the bus, an officer shot at it, COPA said.

The driver was shot and taken to a hospital, where he died.

Two officers were also taken to a hospital in good condition. A weapon was recovered on the scene, COPA said.

Anyone with information or video footage related to the shooting is urged to call COPA at 312-746-3609 or visit ChicagoCOPA.org.
