President Donald Trump has also repeatedly threatened to deploy National Guard troops to curb violence in Chicago.

In a letter to the president, Illinois congressional leaders reiterated that there’s no emergency that warrants military officials in Chicago.

The letter reads in part, “The deployment of the U.S. military into American cities is not about safety or security. It is about control…We demand you halt any plans for deploying military personnel to Chicago and stop your unlawful power grabs and Executive Branch overreach.”

Over the weekend, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order that reaffirms Chicago’s status as a sanctuary and urges federal agents to refrain from wearing masks.

Later Tuesday afternoon Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Governor JB Pritzker will have a press conference about federal deployments.
