The pending deal comes after a year of negotiations between CPS and CTU officials.

According to the terms released by CPS, the four-year tentative agreement includes:
– A 4% raise in year one, and 4-5% increases for the remaining three years
– Increased pay for veteran educators
– 90 new librarians, nurses, 70 technology coordinators, more teacher assistants, bilingual education support and social workers
– New class size limits
– More sustainable schools
– More elementary school teacher prep time
– Doubling the CPS budget for sports
Both CPS and CTU leadership praised the tentative agreement on Tuesday.
Now that the union has presented the plan to its members and approved it, CPS CEO Pedro Martinez will now present the plan to the CPS Board for a final approval. That process could take a couple of weeks.
CTU leaders issued the following statement Wednesday evening:
“In a special meeting of the elected members of the Chicago Teachers Union, the roughly 700 member House of Delegates reviewed and resoundingly approved the tentative agreement reached by its Big Bargaining Team earlier this week.
“‘Everyone wins with this contract: students, educators, and all Chicagoans,’ reflected Vicki Kurzydlo, a delegate from Sauganash Elementary. ‘Educators get the raises that will help keep experienced teachers in the district long-term and students finally get recess, more access to sports, arts, music. It upholds Chicago values of protecting Black history, creating LGBTQIA Safe Schools, and reinforcing our schools as a sanctuary not just for immigrants but for anyone facing discrimination.’
“The union will now be holding a series of webinars and in-school meetings to facilitate discussion and discernment so that members may take an informed vote. Every single union member will have the opportunity to cast their ballot to either ratify the agreement or send it back to the bargaining table.
“The union will hold two days of in-person paper ballot voting on Thursday and Friday of next week, April 10 and 11, and expects the tally to be announced on Mon., April 14.”
