“Lilo & Stitch” teamed with Tom Cruise for a monster Memorial Day box office weekend.

Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” amassed an impressive $145.5 million at North American box offices, according to studio estimates on Sunday, making it the second-largest domestic release of the year, trailing only “A Minecraft Movie.”

The film closely follows the story of the 2002 original, centering on a six-legged alien and a Hawaiian girl, a narrative that has developed a significant cult following over the last few decades.

Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures’ “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” marking the eighth and (potentially final) portrayal of Ethan Hunt by Tom Cruise in the nearly thirty-year series, secured a distant second place domestically. It nevertheless achieved a franchise record by grossing $63 million through Sunday, surpassing the domestic opening of “Mission Impossible: Fallout,” which debuted with $61 million in 2018.

And the spy thriller with Christopher McQuarrie directing for the first time in the franchise was the top global earner with $127 million,” with “Lilo & Stitch” bringing in $111 million.

The previous film, 2023’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” launched with a franchise-best $80 million over five days in a July opening, though it came in shy of industry expectations with a $56.2 million haul over a three-day weekend.
