Lunar New Year 2026 festivities kick off in Chinatown, Chicago as Donald Trump administration's US immigration crackdown continues

CHICAGO (WLS) — As the Chinese Lunar New Year dawns, ushering in the Year of the Horse, it carries a profound significance for many. This year’s celebrations are particularly poignant amidst ongoing immigration activities in Chicago and other cities nationwide.

On Sunday, the streets of Wentworth and Clark were alive with vibrant dances and cultural pride, echoing a strong message of unity within the immigrant community.

“The themes we celebrate are wealth, prosperity, and happiness for all,” explained Edward Huang, a resident of Chinatown. “For the Chinese community, rooted in immigrant history here in Chicago, it serves as an annual reminder of our united spirit.”

The Light Up Chinatown event, organized by the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce alongside several Asian American groups, marks the New Year with illuminations, cheer, and a sense of communal belonging.

This Year of the Horse symbolizes energy, passion, and action, according to the Chinese zodiac.

“It reminds us, as immigrants, to stand together and move forward with determination, regardless of the challenges we face,” Huang added.

This comes as the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown has seen multiple shootings by federal agents, including one fatal shooting in suburban Franklin Park, and more recently, two deadly shootings in Minnesota.

“Let this be a year of unity and strength as the year of the horse charges us to do. It’s to lead with love and to have healthy resistance and a rebellion to ensure that our city remains a welcoming city,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

“It just made me feel great that people are here. We are not afraid to gather. We should be able to celebrate our cultures freely without fear of ICE agents around racially profiling people. Now is a time more than ever for us to show strength and unity as a community,” said 11th Ward Ald. Nicole Lee.

The Lunar New Year officially begins Feb. 17 with the Lunar New Year parade set for March 1.
