Browns open to giving Shedeur Sanders 'extended look' as starter

Shedeur Sanders may soon find himself leading the Cleveland Browns as their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.

According to a report by ESPN on Saturday, the Browns are considering giving Sanders an extended opportunity to prove himself as the team’s primary quarterback for the rest of the season.

This scenario echoes the situation of Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who was afforded multiple starts during the season’s first half to demonstrate his capabilities.

However, any decision to commit to Sanders for the remainder of the season hinges on his performance in the upcoming game against the 49ers, ESPN notes.

Sanders has shown promise, reportedly having another productive week of practice, during which he took reps as the starting quarterback for the second occasion this season.

“He’s been very committed to his work, doing an excellent job and maintaining strong communication with both coaches and players,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski shared with reporters on Friday, according to ESPN. “It’s been a good work week, but nothing out of the ordinary. I believe that once a player has a game under their belt, facing the next one can only be beneficial.”

During his first career NFL start last week, Sanders, 23, helped lead the Browns to a 24-10 win over the Raiders, throwing for 209 passing yards with a touchdown and an interception while completing 11-of-20 passes.

Despite having a solid game, Sanders told reporters he still believes that he needs to fight for a starting job in Cleveland.

“I’m definitely not comfortable, though, so that’s first and foremost that I have another opportunity to go out there,” Sanders said Wednesday. “But in life, you got to understand how quickly things come or how long it comes, it could be taken at any point in time.
