MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 10-year-old girl’s mother, whose life was tragically ended during a mass shooting at a Catholic church in Minneapolis, fondly recalled her daughter on Sunday as a spirited, inquisitive, and humorous child who “never diluted herself.”

An outdoor gathering by a lake brought together friends, family, and others to commemorate Harper Moyski’s life. Speakers at the event urged attendees to commit to fostering a less violent society in America.

On August 27, Harper, along with another student from Annunciation Catholic School, 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel, were killed, and 21 others injured during the shooting. Authorities reported that a 23-year-old former student, Robin Westman, armed with a rifle, pistol, and shotgun, unleashed over a hundred rounds into the church’s windows during a Mass. Westman was later found deceased from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Harper’s mother, Jackie Flavin, expressed to those present that their support had been a lifeline when they themselves felt submerged in an abyss “where everything is shrouded in darkness and the pressure is overwhelming.” Harper, an animal lover who aspired to be a veterinarian, showed them “how to shine in the darkness.”

Flavin shared, “She had her unique perspective, her distinct style, her individual way of existing. She didn’t seek approval. She never diluted herself,” continuing, “And she genuinely taught us to present ourselves truthfully.”

Flavin also called Harper “extra in the very best way.”

“Harper didn’t do anything halfway,” she said. “Always choosing the premium versions, always going for the extra scoop.”

The Minneapolis memorial happened just four days following the shooting death of conservative activist and leader Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. During Harper’s life celebration, speakers voiced their frustration and anger over the persistent issue of gun violence — particularly shootings that claim the lives of schoolchildren.

Another extended family member, Rabbi Jason Rodich, urged people to avoid the acrimony of social media and “the scorched earth of these times.”

“Turn just a little to the warm soul beside you,” he said. “Do it for Harper. Do it for you.”
