Republican North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn will spend his last months in Congress facing an ethics investigation over claims he had an improper relationship with a staffer in his office and improperly promoted a cryptocurrency.

The House Ethics Committee launched an investigation on Monday a week after the 26-year-old congressman was defeated in his Republican primary in North Carolina.

It is the latest blow to the lawmaker once seen as a rising star in the GOP after a slew of scandals and a smear campaign he claimed was blackmail.

The Committee said in a statement that they considered investigating him for driving with a revoked license, but decided against it.

Last Thursday,  as he emerged for the first time since his election night loss, he took to Instagram to rage against the Republican establishment’s criticism of his laundry list of scandals and calling for ‘dark MAGA’ to rise.

After his loss, the lawmaker said he is ‘on a mission now to expose those who say and promise one thing yet legislate and work toward another, self-profiteering, globalist goal.’

Cawthorn also thanked those who supported him in a list he posted to both Instagram and Twitter headlined ‘America First Patriots.’ Surprisingly, Trump doesn’t even crack the list’s top five names.

‘When the establishment turned their guns on me, when the Uni-party coalesced to defeat an America First member very few people had my back. This list includes the lion share of figures that came to my defense when it was not politically profitable,’ Cawthorn wrote.

‘These are honorable men and women who are the type of friends anyone yearns to have.’

He went on to misquote author Mark Twain’s commentary: ‘In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned.’

Taking a more ominous turn, Cawthorn added, ‘The time for gentile politics as usual has come to an end.’

‘It’s time for the rise of the new right, it’s time for Dark MAGA to truly take command. We have an enemy to defeat, but we will never be able to defeat them until we defeat the cowardly and weak members of our own party,’ Cawthorn said.

‘Their days are numbered. We are coming.’

The Global Network on Extremism & Technology (GNET) identifies ‘Dark MAGA’ as a ‘post-alt-right online aesthetic movement.’

‘Dark MAGA’ images, typically made in red and black color schemes and substitute the subject’s eyes for bright white beams.

Internet experts warn that it’s likely a way for far-right or extremist views to be laundered into the mainstream – as evidence by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene sharing an image of herself in the aesthetic earlier this month.

Cawthorn’s ‘America First Patriots’ list begins with Revolver News head Darren Beattie, Fox News host Tucker Carlson, political strategist Alex Bruesewitz, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and conservative commentator Michael Knowles – whose first name he misspelled as ‘Micheal.’

Trump came in sixth on the list, just ahead of Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Bruesewitz commented on Cawthorn’s Instagram post: The best is yet to come my brother.’

Rep. Paul Gosar, another far-right lawmaker singled out on Cawthorn’s list, retweeted the North Carolina congressman’s post in show of support.

‘Madison, you have a bright future as a leader. I have no doubt you will be back and better than ever,’ Gosar wrote.

Earlier, the 26-year-old lawmaker promised  ‘The best is yet to come’ in a cryptic Twitter post.

Cawthorn’s previous social media activity was a congratulations to North Carolina state Senator Chuck Edwards, who defeated Cawthorn on Tuesday night in a razor-thin race.

And despite numerous public rebukes from members of his own party, it’s not clear that the GOP is finished with Cawthorn yet – as indicated by Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy.

‘I want to help him. He had some issues but he’s young and so you don’t wish somebody ill,’ the House Minority Leader told CNN on Wednesday evening.

McCarthy himself was forced to rebuke Cawthorn in public and private after the young firebrand spurred outrage among Republicans on Capitol Hill for claiming he had been invited to an orgy by senior lawmakers where he witnessed colleagues doing cocaine.

But on Wednesday he signaled Cawthorn still had a future within the GOP.

‘I want to help him, I brought him in, I still want to help him. He’s young. His career’s not over,’ McCarthy said.

Cawthorn’s first re-election bid was widely seen as a test of Donald Trump’s influence on Republican voters. The ex-president endorsed Cawthorn last year, and reaffirmed his support in a Monday post urging North Carolinians to give him a ‘second chance’ despite a litany of scandals.

Edwards, who was endorsed by North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, beat Cawthorn by less than two percent on Tuesday night with a margin of 33.4 percent of the vote to the incumbent’s 31.9.

Cawthorn managed to narrow down Edwards’ early 10-point lead but failed to catch up as the local lawmaker walked away with wins in two of the 11th Congressional District’s biggest counties, Buncombe and Henderson.

Cawthorn’s soon-to-be-former district covers the region around the Blue Ridge Mountains.

A Trump protege and former rising GOP star, he was widely seen as the favorite to win the primary and general elections there until a recent slew of scandals derailed that momentum.

It began with his explosive cocaine and orgy comments, as well as calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a ‘thug’ in the midst of Russia’s bloody and unprovoked invasion of his country.

It’s also emerged that since taking office, Cawthorn has been cited twice by authorities for carrying a handgun in his carry-on luggage at the airport, had been stopped by North Carolina highway patrol at least three times, and potentially been implicated in a cryptocurrency scheme.

In addition to allegations of misconduct, Cawthorn has also been forced to grapple with fallout from images emerging showing him wearing women’s lingerie and a dazed look on his face, and back-to-back videos that have embarrassed his public image.

One video shows Cawthorn, seemingly naked, thrusting toward the face of an unknown male.

The other clip was obtained by DailyMail.com and shows Cawthorn’s male scheduler – who he says is his cousin –  placing his hand on the now-lawmaker’s crotch.

The public faux-pas have turned much of the GOP establishment against him.

A super PAC linked to Tillis, one of Cawthorn’s most vocal critics, spent $1.5 million against Cawthorn in the primary election cycle.

But despite that Trump had decided to give the flailing campaign a last-minute boost – even though earlier reports indicated the ex-president found the salacious details ‘gross.’

‘At 18 years of age, Madison Cawthorn, the now 26 year old Congressman from the Great State of North Carolina, went through a life changing event the likes of which, fortunately, few people will ever have to endure,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The former president was referring to a fiery 2014 car wreck that left Cawthorn paralyzed from the waist down and in need of a wheelchair.

His post continued, ‘In just seconds, he lost the use of the lower half of his body, a traumatic experience to say the least.’

‘When Madison was first elected to Congress, he did a great job. Recently, he made some foolish mistakes, which I don’t believe he’ll make again…let’s give Madison a second chance!’
