West Hollywood rail line heads to a vote

West Hollywood, a vibrant area in Los Angeles often plagued by limited public transportation options, may soon welcome a new rail station.

This week, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is poised to decide on the much-anticipated K Line Northern Extension. This significant project aims to deliver subway service directly to the bustling heart of West Hollywood for the first time.

Renowned for its lively nightlife, thriving job market, and notorious traffic congestion, West Hollywood has long lacked convenient rail access. The proposed extension could remedy this critical shortfall in Los Angeles’ transit network.

The project, identified as the San Vicente–Fairfax alignment, seeks to extend the current K Line from Crenshaw, passing through Mid-City, before reaching West Hollywood and eventually Hollywood. Should it gain approval, the extension would feature several stops in West Hollywood, linking commuters to prominent spots such as the Beverly Center, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and The Grove, transforming car-dependent journeys into effortless train rides.

With a projected cost of $15 billion, this ambitious transit endeavor carries a substantial price tag.

Metro anticipates that the new line could facilitate tens of thousands of daily trips, bringing over 125,000 jobs within a short walk of its stations.

After years of studies, debates and delays, the Metro board is expected to make a final call on Thursday March 26 at Metro Headquarters in Downtown. Public input is still open, with officials encouraging residents to weigh in before the vote.
