The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office identified the man involved as 38-year-old Charles Samuel Urbach.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Authorities are conducting an investigation following the death of a man shortly after he was taken into police custody on Sunday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police identified the man involved as 38-year-old Charles Samuel Urbach.

Police said around 12:50 p.m., officers responded to the 2200 block of Cortez Road regarding reports of a “suspicious person.”

Upon arrival, officers encountered Urbach, who was reportedly seen “prowling” around the backyards of several homes. Witnesses mentioned that Urbach tried to enter an occupied residence.

K-9 officers also responded to assist in the search, and police said Urbach was found hiding in a pond behind the homes.

At approximately 1:20 p.m., Urbach was detained without any issues. However, police reported that as Urbach was being moved from the rear of the property to a patrol car, he became “combative” and struck a K-9 officer with his elbow during a search by the police.

Police said officers gained control “using minimal force,” and Urbach was then secured in the back of the patrol vehicle without further incident.

As officers were attempting to identify Urbach, he became unresponsive while in the patrol vehicle, police said.

Officers immediately requested medical assistance from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department after Urbach failed to respond to “multiple sternum rubs”. Trained officers then administered Urbach two doses of Narcan.

JFRD then rushed Urbach to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:42 p.m., police said.

Urbach’s death is listed as undetermined. The investigation remains active as officials await the cause of death identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
