Shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday, a 911 call was received about a man being shot on the road, as stated by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office.

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — According to the sheriff’s office, a man lost his life and a child got injured during a shooting incident in the Deerwood Village area in Camden County on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to 1 p.m. on Sunday, a 911 report indicated a man had been shot in the middle of the street within the Deerwood Village neighborhood, located off Harrietts Bluff Road, as confirmed by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds and a young child who had been shot in the arm, the sheriff’s office said.

The child was airlifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The man was also taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

No suspects are in police custody at this time.

“It is very unfortunate,” said Lamont Supples, who lives in the neighborhood. “It’s sad to say this is where we are today.”

Supples was wrapping up a workout at the gym when he got a surprising call from his wife that there’d been a shooting two doors down from his house.

“My wife called to let me know I wouldn’t be able to get in the gate,” said Supples. “I’d have to be escorted on foot. We all have to be, whoever lives in the neighborhood, to their homes.”

Supples says he and his wife are used to the sound of gunshots in their neighborhood, with many neighbors shooting recreationally.

So, his wife didn’t think much of it when she heard shots – until she saw the flashing lights outside her window.

“No matter where we are, things happen,” said Supples. “Just when people think they live in an area where they’re safe, you have people who live in your areas that are unsafe.”

Camden County Sheriff’s deputies cleared the scene around 5:30 p.m., but are still investigating what caused the shooting.

“We want to assure the public that there is no indication of any continued threat to the community,” the sheriff’s office said in an update on the situation.

In a separate update Monday, the sheriff’s office said investigators are currently reviewing several security camera videos from the area.

“I feel, unfortunately, it’s going to get worse because people are angry,” said Supples. “They’re upset about whatever, but they’re upset. I wish we could come together, but it ain’t looking good.”

The sheriff’s office asks that anyone who has surveillance footage from Deerwood Village or Harrietts Bluff call Sgt. Fortner at 912-674-9485 or email them at mafortner@camdensheriff.org.
