Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently hinted at the possibility of another bid for the presidency during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. When pressed by Hannity on whether he would consider another run for the White House, DeSantis replied with a tentative, “We’ll see.”
The 47-year-old Republican leader of Florida is currently serving his final term, which ends in January 2027, a year before the 2028 presidential primaries kick off. DeSantis had been perceived as a strong contender against former President Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican primaries. However, he exited the race following a second-place finish in the Iowa caucuses.
In that contest, Trump led DeSantis by approximately 30 percentage points. DeSantis has maintained that if Trump had not been in the 2024 race, he would have likely won the support of a significant portion of the former president’s followers.
The governor was viewed as one of the most viable alternatives to Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP primaries, but he dropped out of the race shortly after a second-place finish in the Iowa caucuses.
Trump topped DeSantis by roughly 30 percentage points in Iowa.
DeSantis argued that had Trump not been running in 2024, he wouldâve garnered the support of most of the presidentâs backers.
âIn 2024, like in Iowa, the people that voted for Trump â if he wasnât running â I wouldâve gotten like 90% of those people,â the governor said during his appearance on the âHang Out with Sean Hannityâ podcast.
âThey were conservative voters, right?â DeSantis continued. âThey didnât want the non-conservative â they wanted me.â
âThe timing didnât work out, obviously, for that.â
The latest 2028 GOP presidential primary polls show Vice President JD Vance is the overwhelming frontrunner in the race.
Vance received 40% support in an Echelon Insights survey released last week.
The same survey showed Secretary of State Marco Rubio polling in second with 16% support.
DeSantis pulled only 5% backing, behind the presidentâs son, Donald Trump Jr., who garnered 9% support.
A Saint Anselm College Survey Center poll of New Hampshire primary voters similarly found DeSantis receiving only 5% support in the Granite State â tied with former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
Vance was the top choice of New Hampshire Republicans, receiving 46% support, followed by Rubio at 27%, according to the poll released Monday.
Hannityâs full interview with DeSantis airs Tuesday.
