A Northwest Indiana police officer has died following a medical emergency experienced while playing hockey on Friday night, as announced by officials.

St. John Police Chief Steven Flores reported that officers and first responders from the local fire department were called to the Midwest Training and Ice Center just before 10 p.m. after a man became unconscious.

Upon arrival at the 10600 White Oak Avenue facility, they discovered bystanders administering CPR to the man, who was identified as Detective Aaron Amptmeyer, one of their fellow officers.

First responders performed CPR on Amptmeyer, but were unable to revive him, Flores said.

According to Flores, Amptmeyer began his law enforcement journey at the Gary Police Department in 2005, moved to the Dyer Police Department in 2007, and eventually joined the St. John Police Department in 2018.

Flores characterized Amptmeyer as a father and a “highly decorated police officer” who served as a patrol officer, tac officer, detective, and ultimately as the commander of the Northwest Regional SWAT Team, a role he was most passionate about.

“Detective Amptmeyer deeply impacted many lives and played a significant role in shaping young police officers,” Flores stated. “He cherished his SWAT team, and we all at the St. John Police Department held him dear. His devotion to his daughter surpassed everything. Aaron was loved and will be deeply missed. On behalf of the St. John Police Department, we extend our sincerest condolences to Aaron’s family. Aaron’s memory will endure.”
