Manchester United players and Erik ten Hag have been savaged by L’Equipe after their sorry Champions League exit.

The French newspaper’s ratings can be notoriously harsh and United averaged just 4.3 out of 10 after they crashed out of Europe with a 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.

Antony was ranked as the worst performer, earning a meagre 3 out of 10 mark, the same rating as ten Hag, whose team did ‘not resist or exist’ in their meek surrender on Tuesday.

United’s four points from six games is their lowest ever tally in the Champions League and the 15 goals they have conceded is the most by a Premier League side in any group stage of the competition.

Antony started brightly against Bayern but soon reverted to type and was ineffective throughout.

The Brazilian has registered one assists and no goals in his last 26 appearances in all competitions for United and has seldom lived up to his £90million price tag.

Andre Onana, Raphael Varane and Diogo Dalot were United’s best performers on the night, earning a 5 out of 10 rating with everyone else receiving a 4 out of 10 rating – aside from Harry Maguire, who was forced off the pitch injured.

Coman was voted the man of the match by L’Equipe, earning a 7 out of 10 rating after his match-winning contribution.

Eight Bayern players were rated six out of 10, with the exception of Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka, who received 3 out of 10 and 5 out of 10 respectively. 

L’Equipe noted Bayern were a ‘step too high’ for Ten Hag’s team, suggesting the Champions League exit ‘darkens the picture a little more’ after the dismal 3-0 defeat at home against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Ten Hag, however, insisted he was pleased with his team’s performance against Bayern, despite United having just one shot on goal in a game they had to win.

‘Today’s performance was very good. We didn’t deserve to lose, but we lost the game,’ he said.

‘But also Bayern is a good team. Even when they are not in the game, they have individual class and just need one moment. Unfortunately that happened.

‘We know we want to be more consistent. As manager I have to improve the team, I have to guide them and the players have to take the responsibility. We have to do that together.’

Asked how he looked back on a miserable Group A campaign, the United manager said: ‘Not with regret. We didn’t make it, but we have to accept it. We have to learn from it.

‘We played some good football in the Champions League. We have to take some good performances into the Premier League. 

We want to be back in the Champions League.

‘We didn’t lose it today, that’s clear. We had good performances but also we made mistakes. In the end it was not good enough.

‘The facts are we do not have enough points. We are disappointed as a group, as a manager, I am disappointed. We should have done better.’
