Five soldiers were wounded in the shooting, which happened Wednesday morning.

FORT STEWART, Ga. — The suspect in the shooting at Fort Stewart in Georgia that injured five soldiers has been identified as a male Army sergeant.

Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon to address the public. He confirmed that Quornelius Radford is the suspect accused of the shooting incident at the base.

Radford, who was on duty at the base, began shooting at his fellow soldiers, who were also his colleagues, according to Lubas. Fortunately, soldiers managed to tackle him, preventing further injuries.

Lubas described Radford as a logistics sergeant with no experience in active combat. He mentioned that Radford had a previous DUI charge near Fort Stewart, which was unknown to his superiors.

The firearm used by Radford was his personal handgun, not provided by the Army, according to Lubas. The Army is investigating how he was able to bring a personal weapon onto the base.

A base official reported that Radford was taken into custody approximately forty minutes after law enforcement arrived. Lubas noted that a fellow soldier tackled Radford during the shooting, stopping him from causing additional harm. Law enforcement officers arrived just before 11 a.m., and Radford was detained by 11:35 a.m.

The Army’s criminal investigation division has questioned him, and he is currently in custody, awaiting charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Lubas stated.

No other information on the suspect is available at this time.

The five wounded were treated by first responders on base, and mutual aid was later requested. Two were taken to a hospital in Savannah. Three of five needed surgery, Lubas said.

They are all stable at this time and expected to be OK, he said.
