DNC mocks Trump by flying 'Qatar-a-Lago' banner over Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida

The banner comes as response to Pres. Trump planning to accept a jumbo jet as a gift from the ruling family of Qatar.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — On Wednesday, the Democratic National Committee arranged for a banner to be flown over Mar-A-Lago as President Donald Trump prepared to receive a luxury jumbo jet as a gift from Qatar’s ruling family during his Middle East visit.

The banner, reading “Qatar-A-Lago,” was set up by the Democratic National Committee as a critique of Trump’s ties to Qatar and the Middle East.

DNC Chari Ken Martin accused Trump this week of using the presidency to personally enrich himself.

“I would never decline such an offer,” Trump remarked to reporters on Monday. “It would be foolish to say, ‘No, we don’t want a complimentary, extremely costly plane.'”

Opponents of this decision are concerned that accepting the jet could transform a global symbol of American authority into a complex mix of ethical, legal, security, and counterintelligence issues.

At the time this story was published, the White House had not responded to NBC News’ request for comment about the banner.

The Associated Press and NBC contributed to this story.
