In a message posted Monday on X, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon from the Civil Rights Division advised Weiner to consult with legal advisors, suggesting that he would learn that his proposal does not align with legal standards.
“Scott, go check with a lawyer if this is a thing and get back to us. (Hint — it isn’t— states can’t regulate what federal law enforcement wears),” Dhilion’s post read.

It came after Wiener alleged on social media that there was some kind of “rise” of secret police, whose behavior needed to be checked.
“We’re announcing new legislation — the No Secret Police Act (SB 627) — to ban local/state/federal law enforcement, w/ some exceptions, from covering their faces when interacting w/ the public & require them to wear identifying info,” Weiner’s post read. “Secret police behavior tanks trust & must end.”
“We’re seeing the rise of secret police — masked, no identifying info, even wearing army fatigues — grabbing & disappearing people,” he added with more insane claims. “It’s antithetical to democracy & harms communities. The No Secret Police Act can help end the fear & chaos this behavior creates in communities.”
California State Sen. Scott Wiener’s proposed legislation banning our federal law enforcement from wearing masks and his rhetoric comparing ICE to “secret police” is despicable.

The Department of Homeland Security also responded to Wiener’s attempt to change the tactics law enforcement is using in ICE raids to keep them and their families safe, calling claims of “secret police” despicable.
Not only is our ICE law enforcement facing a more than 400 percent increase in assaults, but we’ve also seen thugs launch websites to reveal ICE officers’ identity.
The post noted that there will be a zero tolerance policy when it comes to those who dox ICE agents who “put their lives on the line every day to arrest violent criminal illegal aliens to protect and defend the lives of American citizens.”
“Make no mistake, this type of rhetoric is contributing to the surge in assaults of ICE officers through their repeated vilification and demonization of ICE,” it concluded.
This new attack on law enforcement who are wearing masks is insane to anyone who lived through the COVID-19 pandemic, coming from the same party that forced 2-year-olds in daycare to wear masks.
Unfortunately, Wiener isn’t the only Democrat making such claims. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently vowed to reveal the identities of every single ICE agent who he claimed were “trying to hide” who they were after putting their lives on the line to keep Americans safe.
