Drew Barrymore became emotional speaking to Teen Mom stars Mackenzie McKee and Brianna DeJesus on this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
Now as mothers of teenagers, McKee and DeJesus shared with Barrymore their desire for their children not to repeat the choices they made at the same age—a sentiment Barrymore, who shares daughters Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10, with her ex-husband Will Kopelman, could relate to.
“I felt deeply affected because I am finally growing more proud of who I am today. Although I am not ashamed of my past, when it comes to my children, I find it hard to forgive myself,” Barrymore explained. She added, “Things changed when I became a parent, and I am determined not to let my kids be as carefree and wild as I was.”
Barrymore often discusses her unique childhood on The Drew Barrymore Show. In an episode aired in February 2024, she reminded viewers of her past, mentioning she was “smoking at nine, using drugs by eleven, and sent to an institution at thirteen.” She also recently mentioned that she celebrated her tenth birthday at a nightclub.
While Barrymore’s daughters are being raised in a completely different way, the actress became emotional over her inability to “forgive” herself for her actions growing up.
“We’re making out it out, we want to be good people, we want to be good moms,” Barrymore said. “I have a lot of accountability, too. I don’t think anything happened to me. I think I made choices and I’ve had to deal with those choices.”
“If I had blamed somebody else, I would’ve forgiven them by now,” she continued. “And I haven’t forgiven myself and it’s really hard.”
Struggling to hold back tears, Barrymore said she wants her “kids to be kids.”
“I see how important that is now. I didn’t understand that growing up,” she said. “And I want to protect them so much. Putting the time in, being willing to put the time in, I think that’s been a huge recipe for me, is, like, keep making that daily investment in your kids, like, being present.”
