A Florida man engaged in holiday charity work as a Salvation Army bell ringer found himself in legal trouble after an incident that unfolded just before Christmas. Authorities report that Steven Pavlik, aged 63, was arrested for allegedly attempting to assault a grocery store manager with the metal tripod used for the donation kettle.

Officials detailed that Pavlik, who was stationed outside a Publix in Stuart, Florida, was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest. The altercation reportedly began when Pavlik, allegedly under the influence, engaged in a heated confrontation with the store’s manager.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office shared on social media that Pavlik’s attempt at spreading holiday cheer turned chaotic. The situation escalated when he was accused of drunkenly harassing shoppers, turning what should have been a festive scene into a disruptive episode.

According to the sheriff’s office, the store manager approached Pavlik due to his behavior, which included aggressively interacting with people entering and exiting the store. This confrontation led to Pavlik’s arrest, after he fled the scene and was later apprehended at his residence.

What started as a seasonal act of goodwill spiraled into a scene of disorder, leaving Pavlik facing serious charges and highlighting the unfortunate events that can sometimes mar the holiday spirit.

The store manager confronted Pavlik after he allegedly got drunk on duty and began “aggressively” harassing passersby, causing a “major disturbance” outside the store, according to the sheriff’s office.

Pavlik then allegedly attacked the store manager with his donation kettle tripod.

“When the Publix manager came outside to speak to Pavlik, he became violent and attempted to impale the manager with the donation kettle tripod,” the sheriff’s office wrote.

The manager wasn’t injured during the attack, the sheriff’s office said.

Pavlik fled, but deputies later located him at his home, where he was taken into custody.

Publix and the Salvation Army did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
