AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) — An early morning crash involving a fuel truck shut down a major stretch of I-20 eastbound in Aiken County Saturday.
Officials report that the call was received shortly before 4 a.m. Emergency responders arrived at the location near mile marker 13, where an 18-wheeler was on fire. Several agencies, including police and fire departments, were dispatched to manage the situation.
Two people were sent to the hospital.
As of now, I-20 is completely shut down between Exit 11 and Exit 18. A bridge on Old Vaucluse Road also collapsed. That road is also closed.
Officials say this will be a prolonged closure. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and find alternate routes.
As per the South Carolina Department of Transportation, Eastbound vehicles are being rerouted off I-20 at Exit 11, with re-entry at Exit 18. The detour for Westbound traffic is the reverse; from Exit 18 to Exit 11.
