Several firefighters sustained injuries after a car caught fire and triggered a significant explosion on Wednesday evening in New York City, as reported by a police spokesperson to Fox News Digital.

The explosion was traced back to a vehicle at 7:13 p.m. in a neighborhood of the Bronx that blends residential and commercial spaces, specifically near Fox Street and Westchester Avenue.

According to police, three firefighters from the FDNY were taken to nearby hospitals and are in stable condition. However, initial reports from the New York Post suggested that a total of six responders were injured.

A video shared on social media captured the moment when flames appeared near what seemed to be a white commercial van, just before an explosion sent a towering fireball and thick smoke into the sky.

In addition to the main blast, several smaller explosions were filmed, filling the night with electrical sparks and sharp popping noises.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear.

The fire was reportedly under control by 8:19 p.m. NYPost added, citing the authorities. 

Police say this is an ongoing incident.
