The Jacksonville community and Terry Parker alumni have collectively raised more than $11,000 to aid the school following the theft of equipment from the football and softball teams.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A devastating theft at Terry Parker High School has prompted a powerful display of solidarity from both alumni and the broader Jacksonville community.

Alumni from three decades of graduating classes united to assist the football and softball teams after the theft of equipment valued in the thousands, which occurred on April 30.

School pride and generosity were on full display as Terry Parker alumni reunited at Sneakers Grille to help the young athletes and their coaches.

For many, it wasn’t just about the gear, but about giving back to a place that helped shape who they are today.

“I just want to support Terry Parker because I went to school there,” said Candy Williams, from the Terry Parker class of 1967. “I was the class of ‘67 — we’re the best from hell to heaven.”

“When I heard about the burglary, it broke my heart for the kids,” Cheryl Joseph, of Terry Parker class of 1970, said.

Joseph and Williams showed up and gave what they could to help the athletes and their coaches.

“My kids went to school there and they need help, so it was my blessing to be able to help,” Williams said.

Having played for the Terry Parker Braves from ’68 to ’70, giving back to the team means a lot to Bob Cole.

“We as a community owe it to these student-athletes to support them — the boys who play football and the girls who play softball. They’re going to learn life lessons playing those sports, and I think we can all do our part to support them,” Cole said.

According to Terry Parker alumni, through checks and online donations, the sports teams have already raised more than $11,000, but they still have a ways to go.

“The equipment alone — helmets, shoes, and headgear — costs around $7,000. We still need their TV and other things they need,” said Kim Herrington, Terry Parker Class of 1989. “It’s been overwhelming to have the community’s support and to see that people want to make sure these young men and women receive what they need to be successful.”

The Terry Parker football and softball teams are accepting donations until May 28.
