The family of the victims has released a heartfelt statement expressing their profound sorrow following the tragic events that unfolded at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island. A transgender gunman, identified as Robert Dorgan, opened fire during the game, targeting his own family members.

On that fateful Monday, 56-year-old Robert Dorgan unleashed violence inside the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket. The hockey match between Coventry and Blackstone Valley schools turned into a scene of horror as Dorgan shot and killed his ex-wife, Rhonda Dorgan, and their son, Aidan Dorgan, before taking his own life. Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves confirmed these devastating details.

In the wake of this tragedy, the attorneys representing the Dorgan family issued a statement on Wednesday. Rhonda’s parents, Linda and Gerald Dorgan, along with a family friend, Thomas Giarrusso, remain hospitalized in critical condition.

The family’s statement poignantly reminds us, “Behind every headline is a family experiencing profound pain and loss.” They emphasized their deep concern for all families affected by this heartbreaking event, extending their thoughts and solidarity to those impacted.

Captured in a graduation photo, Aidan Dorgan stands beside his mother, Rhonda, both of whom were victims of the shooting at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena. This image, shared by Rhonda on Facebook, now serves as a somber reminder of lives lost too soon.

The family acknowledged the many questions surrounding the incident, stating, “While there are many questions being asked, please know we are focused on all of those who have been injured and whose lives have been forever changed.” Their words underscore the enduring impact of this tragedy and the collective grief felt by the community.

The Dorgan family was sitting in the bleachers during the shooting, but police said it appeared there was no conversation or confrontation between the suspect and the victims before he opened fire.

Authorities have not yet released a suspected motive.

Attorneys said the family is cooperating with the appropriate authorities and agencies, and asked all questions be referred to legal spokesperson Lawrence J. Signore.

They did not comment on Robert and Rhonda’s two surviving children.
