BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A man was fatally shot in what appears to be an abandoned house in west Birmingham on Wednesday morning.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald with the Birmingham Police Department said that around 10:40 a.m., police received a call of a person shot inside what is believed to be an abandoned house in the 3200 block of Avenue S. At the scene, officers found a man shot inside the house. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced the man, whom Fitzgerald described as an “older adult,” dead.
Fitzgerald said community members provided a tip to police that led them to detaining at a woman at a nearby residence. That woman transported to BPD Headquarters. She was then taken to the Birmingham City Jail and booked on a 48-hour felony extension.
Fitzgerald said according to a preliminary investigation, there was a fight inside the house between the victim and the suspect. Police think the suspect shot the victim. Fitzgerald said there may have been criminal activity taking place inside the house before the shooting.
Those with information on the shooting are asked to call the BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
