DOJ hits train stabbing suspect with federal charge as FBI investigates on-camera attack

The Department of Justice revealed on Tuesday that Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr. has been formally charged with causing death on a mass transit system. This charge is linked to the brutal stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee.

President Donald Trump commented on the incident, labeling Brown as a “lunatic” and advocating for stricter sentencing laws and increased federal involvement. On Monday, Patel stated: “From the outset, the FBI has been examining the Charlotte train murder. More updates to come.”

Zarutska and her family escaped from Ukraine in 2022 amidst war and settled in Charlotte, her obituary notes. At the time of her tragic death, she was employed at Zepeddie’s Pizza and was seen in her work attire on the train’s surveillance footage.

Her family remembered Zarutska as a vibrant artist and alumna of Synergy College in Kyiv, where she majored in art and restoration. She was celebrated for her artistic talent, love for animals, resilience, and thirst for knowledge.
