Florida college student who allegedly shipped 1,500 rounds of ammo to dorm had AR-15 under bed

A college student from Florida has been taken into custody after reportedly having 1,500 rounds of ammunition delivered to his dormitory, along with a semi-automatic rifle found stashed under his bed, as authorities revealed.

Constantine Demetriades, a 21-year-old senior enrolled at Rollins College, faces charges of possessing a weapon on school grounds. He was apprehended by Winter Park police on Wednesday following a report from the assistant campus safety director who flagged the ammunition order. This information is detailed in an arrest affidavit, according to WKMG’s coverage.

In response to the suspicious ammunition purchase, the assistant safety director conducted a search of Demetriades’ dorm room. The search allegedly led to the discovery of an unloaded AR-15 rifle stored in an unsecured black carrying case under his bed. Alongside the rifle, authorities reportedly found one loaded magazine, five empty magazines, a tactical vest, several knives, a black security vest, and protective ear gear.

According to the affidavit, Demetriades, who described shooting as a pastime, explained to the police that the rifle was on campus as he had just returned from a Thanksgiving trip to New Jersey. He claimed that the firearms were legally acquired and registered in New Jersey.

Demetriades insisted he had no malicious intent and typically kept the firearm at a friend’s residence off-campus. He also mentioned that he brought the gun to campus on only one previous occasion, as stated in the affidavit.

He said he did not have ill intentions and that he usually stores the firearm at a friend’s home off school property, the affidavit stated. He also said he only brought the gun to campus on one other occasion.

While Florida allows open carry, Rollins College bans all weapons on campus. Demetriades allegedly said he is aware that weapons are not allowed on campus and that his New Jersey concealed carry permit does not apply in Florida.

The college told WKMG that he is banned from campus until the situation is resolved, adding that an internal investigation has been opened.

“On Wednesday, the College received a report indicating a violation of our weapons policy,” Rollins College said in a statement. “After receiving this information, we immediately initiated an investigation.”

“We quickly identified and contacted the student, who cooperated fully with College officials and local law enforcement as we investigated the matter further,” the statement continued. “The student was arrested and is not permitted to be on campus while the College proceeds with the student conduct process.”

Rollins College and the Winter Park Police Department did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital.
