Mark Sanchez stabbed: Former NFL quarterback released from custody week after parking fight arrest, stabbing in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Former NFL quarterback and sports commentator Mark Sanchez was freed from custody on Sunday, roughly a week after authorities reported he was involved in a stabbing incident with a truck driver outside a hotel in Indiana.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has verified Sanchez’s release. He is now facing a felony battery charge, along with multiple misdemeanor charges, stemming from what prosecutors describe as an altercation over parking.

An affidavit from the police describes the 38-year-old Sanchez, who allegedly smelled of alcohol, confronting 69-year-old Perry Tole. Tole had parked his truck at a hotel’s loading docks in downtown Indianapolis on October 4th. In a lawsuit filed Monday, Tole alleges that Sanchez unlawfully entered the truck and physically blocked and pushed Tole, prompting Tole to retaliate with pepper spray.

When Sanchez advanced after being sprayed, Tole pulled a knife to defend himself, authorities said.

Sanchez sustained stab wounds to his upper right torso and was treated at a hospital, as documented in a police affidavit. An online image of Tole shows him wearing a neck brace in a hospital bed, covered in blood, with a severe cut on his face.

Sanchez was in Indianapolis for Fox’s coverage of last Sunday’s game between the Colts and the Las Vegas Raiders.

Before retiring in 2019, Sanchez enjoyed a 10-year career in the NFL. He had a four-season stint with the New York Jets and also played with teams in Philadelphia, Dallas, and Washington.

He appeared on ABC and ESPN for two years before joining Fox Sports as a game analyst in 2021.

A defense attorney for Sanchez didn’t immediately respond to a telephone message seeking comment.
