The suspect attempted to escape but was later apprehended and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was reported to be in serious condition.

The off-duty officer was transported to a hospital for observation. A knife was recovered from the scene, police said.

The CPD Investigative Response Team Detectives is investigating the circumstances of the incident and charges are pending.

In a statement, the Broadview police detailed, “At approximately 8:02 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, off-duty Village of Broadview Police Detective Anthony Beattie was entering his garage, when a male intruder also entered. A confrontation followed, during which the intruder brandished a knife, prompting the detective to draw his gun and shoot the intruder in the leg and arm. The suspect fled but was captured by Chicago Police about half a block away in an empty lot, still armed with the knife. The suspect is now in stable condition. Detective Beattie, who was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital for observation and released, is a 9-month veteran of the BPD. He has been assigned to administrative duties for 30 days in accordance with BPD policy, while the Chicago Police Department investigates since the event took place in their area and our officer was off duty.”

The shooting comes as police are also investigating a separate shooting involving a Chicago officer shooting a suspect on the West Side.
