George Clooney has French citizenship

George Clooney and his family have officially become citizens of France, according to a report by The Guardian. The acclaimed actor, alongside his wife Amal and their children, has been granted French citizenship.

In October, Clooney remarked that their 8-year-old twins enjoy a “much better life” in France compared to what they might have experienced in the United States. This decision aligns with a trend seen in early 2025, where several American entertainers relocated abroad, possibly influenced by shifts in the U.S. political landscape. However, Clooney emphasized to Esquire that the French approach to celebrity children, characterized by a notable level of indifference, is a key advantage for his family.

“I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi,” Clooney explained. “I want them to grow up without the pressure of being compared to other famous kids.”

Now holding dual citizenship in both the U.S. and France, Clooney married Amal, a British human rights attorney, in 2014. Amal, who is fluent in French, complements their new life in France, as noted by The Guardian.

Despite their French residency, the 64-year-old actor shared with The New York Times in February that they continue to maintain homes in England and the U.S. However, the family predominantly resides on a farm in France, where they cherish the privacy it affords.

The 64-year-old actor told the New York Times in February that his family still has homes in England and the U.S, but spends most of their time on a farm in France, where they appreciate the privacy.

Celebrities including Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres indicated they recently left the U.S. in favor of a more liberal cultural climate.

That isn’t the reason Clooney gave for relocating, but he said in a 2020 interview with SIRIUS radio host Howard Stern that he sees the U.S. President as a “dumb goofball” who was desperate to be seen with celebrities like himself. Trump dismissed Clooney as a  “second rate movie ‘star’” in a March social media post.
