Hamas claimed on Sunday that it would release American hostage Edan Alexander.
Alexander, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, has been held captive in Gaza since the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel.
“In a recent effort by the mediating allies to broker a ceasefire, Hamas has engaged with the U.S. administration,” stated a translated announcement from the organization.
“The group has demonstrated a positive stance, and as a gesture towards the ceasefire, Israeli soldier and dual American citizen, [Edan] Alexander, will be released. This step also aligns with the plans to reopen border crossings and allow humanitarian aid and relief to reach the Gaza Strip,” the statement elaborated.

It’s unclear when Alexander could be released.
Alexander, originally from Tenafly, New Jersey, relocated to Israel at the age of 18 to serve voluntarily in the IDF’s Golani Brigade. He resided with his grandparents in Tel Aviv and at Kibbutz Hazor and was part of a community of lone soldiers.
He was kidnapped on the morning of October 7 — a Saturday, he wasn’t required to remain on base. His mother was visiting from abroad, and like many lone soldiers, he had the option to go home for the weekend. But he chose to stay, not wanting to leave his comrades short-staffed on guard duty.
