Orlando Rivas dies after trying to shield students from pole in Buffalo Grove High School crash near Dundee Road: officials

A security guard known for his bravery in safeguarding students during a car accident has tragically passed away, as confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. The incident occurred in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, during the school’s dismissal time.

Orlando Rivas, the heroic guard, had been in a coma following surgery aimed at reducing swelling in his brain. His family shared that he was hospitalized in an effort to manage his critical condition.

“Orlando was an exceptional person who worked tirelessly to support his family,” said Keith Tennyson, Rivas’ cousin. “He wanted his wife, Erin, to be able to stay home with their children and care for them. Losing him is devastating for us all.”

To his family and all who knew him, Rivas was nothing short of a hero.

The 52-year-old sustained severe injuries at Buffalo Grove High School when a vehicle exiting the parking lot struck a pole, which then fell on him. His family recounted that he was attempting to protect students at the time.

“Orlando had an incredible impact on those around him. His personality was infectious, and his selflessness was evident in his actions,” Tennyson remarked. “He risked his life to protect others, and I believe he would do it again without hesitation. Our family has practically taken over the hospital floor to be there for him, sometimes with as many as 30 people gathered.”

Rivas suffered a traumatic brain injury.

The medical examiner’s office said he died Friday.

Rivas has four children, ranging in age from 4 to 30 years old. He is the son of longtime Chicago White Sox Chef Roy Rivas. ABC7 is told that Rivas also worked for the team, helping with security and parking, and his role at Buffalo Grove High School was meant to be his retirement job.

He was deeply loved and respected by students and staff. His family was grateful for the outpouring of support from the school and community.

“We’re being strong. We’re being positive. We’re all coming together,” Tennyson said. “I just want everyone to pray for Orlando Rivas, because he deserves it.”

A GoFundMe page set up to help the family has already raised over $100,000.

Buffalo Grove police said no citations or charges have been filed.

“Orlando Rivas represented the very best of our community,” Police Chief Brian Budds said in a statement. “His dedication to the safety and well-being of students and staff was evident every day, and his final act speaks volumes about his character. Our hearts are with his family, the students and staff of Buffalo Grove High School, and all those grieving this profound loss. Mr. Rivas quickly became a trusted and familiar presence at our school, known for making students, families, and visitors feel welcomed, valued, and safe,” said Principal Jeff Wardle. “His life was defined by service to others and a continued commitment to supporting and guiding young people. Life without him will be less bright.”
