A man in Southern California reportedly shot and killed a police officer, then led authorities on a high-speed motorcycle chase reaching up to 150 mph, which ended when another officer collided with him, law enforcement officials stated.

The suspect, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed, allegedly shot San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez in Rancho Cucamonga on Monday afternoon, police reported. Following the incident, the suspect fled on a motorcycle along the 210 freeway, racing past vehicles at speeds exceeding 100 mph while being pursued by police.

The chase ended in shocking fashion when an off-duty officer in a Toyota Camry veered into the biker’s path, deliberately collided with him and sent him and his motorcycle soaring into the air.

The chase concluded when both the motorcycle and suspect crashed on the highway and skidded into the median. The suspect was then airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to recover and face murder charges, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities confirmed that Deputy Nunez, aged 28, succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head. He had been serving with the department for six years.

Governor Gavin Newsom remarked, “His bravery, compassion, and dedication to safeguarding others epitomize the highest standards of law enforcement. We remember his life and service with gratitude and ensure that his sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

Deputy Nunez and another officer had been responding to a call regarding a domestic violence situation and were immediately confronted with gunfire, as stated by the governor.

Nunez and a fellow officer had been responding to a domestic violence incident and were immediately met with gunfire, according to the governor.
