A July 4th parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park has been halted and the streets cleared amid unconfirmed reports of a shooting.
The Chicago Sun Times reports that multiple people were shot and ‘bloodied’ shortly after 10am on Monday.
Highland Park Police will not confirm that shots were fired; the town has said only that there was an ‘incident’ in the area. Highland Park is 29 miles north of Chicago.
Videos from the event show people running for their lives as cries of ‘gun shots! gun shots!’ are heard between music.
Within minutes, the streets had been cleared.
The City of Highland Park said in a Facebook announcement: ‘Highland Park Police are responding to an incident in downtown Highland Park.
‘Fourth Fest has been canceled. Please avoid downtown Highland Park.’
