On this day in 2017, Ratko Mladić, a Bosnian Serb general responsible for orchestrating the 1995 Srebrenica massacre—the most heinous massacre in Europe since World War II—was found guilty of genocide and other crimes by the United Nations’ Yugoslav war crimes tribunal. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Back in 1718, the infamous pirate Edward Teach, better known as “Blackbeard,” met his end during a fierce battle with British naval forces near Ocracoke Island in North Carolina.
