The mother of a child who was injured in a shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis will address the public on Thursday from the hospital where she works and where her daughter received medical care.

Vivian St. Clair, 9, was shot multiple times in her back and arm during the attack that left two children dead and 21 people injured.

Her mother, Malia Kimbrell, is expected to be joined by her Hennepin Healthcare colleagues, where she is a nurse.

A GoFundMe to help pay for Vivian’s medical expenses had raised more than $160,000 by Thursday afternoon.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, announced plans to convene a special legislative session to propose stricter gun laws following the incident at Annunciation Church.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday after visiting a public school in Eagan, a suburb of Minneapolis, Walz shared his intention to consult with lawmakers and draft a comprehensive plan within the next few days, potentially including a ban on assault weapons.

However, the success of implementing new firearms restrictions remains uncertain due to the sharp political divide in Minnesota’s state legislature. An upcoming special election may lead to a 67-67 split in the House under Republican leadership, while Senate Democrats hold a marginal one-seat advantage.
