Just a day after President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the Pope on his Truth Social platform, reactions continue to pour in. Our editor Bob Hoge covered the spread of this meme and noted how it’s causing quite a stir, particularly among those on the Left. As Hoge pointed out, Trump’s skills in trolling may outshine even his famous deal-making abilities, and the mixture of responses—from outrage and confusion to laughter and anger—demonstrates this well.
But it is the outrage on the Left, a majority of them not even Catholics themselves, that is rich.
To my American friends who are Catholics, how do you feel about this? Is it just a light-hearted joke that gets a laugh out of everyone? I keep up with a lot of Catholic priests on this platform and I’m curious if they will respond to this at all. https://t.co/QqmR8qOGii

Then there are the ones who are not only offended, but who need to tell you why YOU should be offended.
The “Trump as Pope” picture is seen as disrespectful to Catholics. However, more concerning to Catholics perhaps should be Trump’s approach to the poor, the marginalized, and migrants, whom Jesus cherished deeply.

Anyone whose handle is “The Liberation Theology Podcast,” a belief system that is an aberration of and an offense to fundamentalist Christianity, has no call to talk about what is and is not offensive.
But, I digress…
This concern-trolling screed supposes that Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio should be equally offended, and should have advised Trump not to post the meme.
Hi @realDonaldTrump,
This kind of ill-mannered American college boy banter is deeply offensive, because for Catholics the Pope is the representative of Christ on earth. I suppose it will also be offensive to your Vice President @JDVance and your Secretary of State @marcorubio… pic.twitter.com/8Vf0H8mKy5

@realDonaldTrump, This kind of ill-mannered American college boy banter is deeply offensive, because for Catholics the Pope is the representative of Christ on earth. I suppose it will also be offensive to your Vice President @JDVance and your Secretary of State @marcorubio @SecRubio, who are practising Catholics. Why don’t you also joke by dressing up as the Grand Ayatollah, or the Dalai Lama, or the Grand Rabbi? In politics you can play with everything but the faith and religion of the citizens. Are there no advisors in the White House who dare to tell you things?
Then there is former Republican and moral compass Bill Kristol, who also concern-trolled the vice president about what his response should be to Trump’s meme.
Hey, @JDVance, you fine with this disrespect and mocking of the Holy Father? https://t.co/xbPs1hf5Gn
— Bill Kristol (@BillKristol) May 3, 2025
Vance responded, not missing a beat, by pointing out Kristol’s faux concern, as well as his hypocrisy.
As a general rule, I’m fine with people telling jokes and not fine with people starting stupid wars that kill thousands of my countrymen. https://t.co/2WQPsofVIH

Ooh. That’s gonna leave a mark on this virtue-signaling death merchant.
Speaking of rank hypocrisy and arbiters of death, NY Gov. Kathy Hochul decided that she must speak on behalf of her fellow Catholics about how “deeply offensive” Trump’s meme is, especially while they are mourning the death of Pope Francis.
This is deeply offensive to me and to my fellow Catholics around the world as we continue to mourn our beloved Pope Francis. https://t.co/i3Uv3zjwdT
— Governor Kathy Hochul (@GovKathyHochul) May 3, 2025
As a rabid pro-abort, Hochul has no ounce of grief or compassion for babies in the womb. In November 2024, Hochul praised New Yorkers for voting to pass Amendment 1, which embeds so-called “reproductive rights” into the state constitution. In her speech praising the passage of the measure, Hochul claimed abortion is a “human right.”
WATCH:
Abortion is health care and a human right.
Because you stood up and cast your vote, that right is now protected in New York. pic.twitter.com/94vHK6ffJl

The Catholics who do not support the extinguishing of life in the womb, as well as those babies aborted under her watch, would like a word.
But Kristol and Hochul are in good company. These are the same people who refused to condemn the abomination pictured above: The “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” and their mockery of the Catholic Church.
Oh, the outrage over Trump’s Pope meme—from the same crowd that applauded an abortion bus outside the DNC and cheered on the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for mocking Christ.
Truly the moral compass of our time! pic.twitter.com/Kl5Iq1nf8i

The same people who vociferously defended France when they chose to mock the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
Liberals can mock the Last Supper & Catholicism in general at the Olympics, in addition to many other times they’ve mocked religion, but Trump posting a meme as him as Pope isn’t okay? pic.twitter.com/sGp6Xn0Fwa

And lest we forget, the same people who laughed at and praised this debasement of the Eucharist by Michigan’s Democrat Gov. Gretchen “Big Gretch” Whitmer.
Oh you are deeply offended, are you. pic.twitter.com/mbFocZlZzJ

So, the Left’s offense over Trump’s Pope meme, and their fake concern for Catholics and their faith, will blow over as soon as Trump deports more criminal illegals, further toys with tariffs, or starts jailing activist judges. Once that happens, these highly (im)moral souls will go back to their mockery of faith and people of faith. They simply cannot help themselves:
The same people on the left who are “outraged” about Trumps picture as Pope, are the same ones who support and make garbage like “Conclave” and movies like it that are genuinely offensive to Catholics.
Its all virtue signalling BS.
The picture was funny.
