Ilhan Omar attacked as man sprays unknown substance during Minneapolis town hall

In a dramatic turn of events at a Minneapolis town hall, U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar found herself at the center of chaos when a man in a black jacket sprayed an unknown substance on her. The incident, which took place on a Tuesday, ended with the man being tackled to the ground by audience members who quickly intervened.

The crowd erupted in cheers as they subdued the man, securing his arms behind his back. A video recording of the scene captures a voice from the audience exclaiming, “Oh my god, he sprayed something on her.” Despite the unsettling disruption, Omar composedly resumed the town hall once the man was removed from the premises.

Prior to the incident, Rep. Omar had been addressing the audience with a passionate call for significant changes to U.S. immigration policy. She advocated for the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and urged for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, stating emphatically, “ICE cannot be reformed.”

Efforts to reach the Minneapolis Police Department for details about the incident or information regarding any arrests have so far gone unanswered. Similarly, a request for comment from the White House on Tuesday night did not receive an immediate response.

It’s worth noting that President Donald Trump has been escalating his verbal criticisms of Omar, particularly as he turns his attention more sharply to the political landscape of Minneapolis. This incident adds another layer of complexity to the already tense political climate surrounding the congresswoman.

President Donald Trump has frequently criticized the congresswoman and has stepped up verbal attacks on her in recent months as he turned his focus on Minneapolis.

During a Cabinet meeting in December, he called her “garbage” and added that “her friends are garbage.”

Hours earlier on Tuesday, the president criticized Omar as he spoke to a crowd in Iowa, saying his administration would only let in immigrants who “can show that they love our country.”

“They have to be proud, not like Ilhan Omar,” he said, drawing loud boos at the mention of her name.

He added: “She comes from a country that’s a disaster. So probably, it’s considered, I think – it’s not even a country.”

Fellow U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, R-S.C., denounced the assault on Omar.

“I am deeply disturbed to learn that Rep. Ilhan Omar was attacked at a town hall today” Mace said via the social platform X. “Regardless of how vehemently I disagree with her rhetoric – and I do – no elected official should face physical attacks. This is not who we are.”

The attack came days after a man was arrested in Utah for allegedly punching U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost, a Democrat from Florida, in the face during the Sundance Film Festival and saying Trump was going to deport him.
