Five years, four seasons, a pandemic, countless glances (and countless arguments), Mythic Quest finally did the damn thing.
**Spoilers ahead for the Season 4 finale of Mythic Quest**
I am aware that somewhere on the internet, there’s likely a gloomy group disappointed about Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian (Rob McElhenney) rounding off Season 4 with a passionate makeout session, but I certainly don’t belong to it. From the beginning, I’ve recognized the electric chemistry between these actors and believed that despite their characters initially wincing at the idea of getting together, they could overcome that awkwardness if they put their minds—and lips—together. Apologies, I had to make that joke.
Which is why Season 4 stands out as arguably the best season the show has delivered. Mythic Quest thrives when Poppy and Ian operate in harmony, achieving a kind of synergy that would even impress long-time married couples. That’s a significant part of why I appreciate their dynamic so much and have continuously hoped to see them unite. Despite being visionaries, the game creators remain oblivious to what’s right before them. Poppy almost relocating across the globe to be with her child’s father, Storm (Chase Yi), required her to realize this. They’re not meant to be separated and might be destined for more than just a professional alliance.
Perhaps I’m a hopeless romantic, but I’ve always perceived their “finish each other’s sentences” and “you irritate me because you know me best” relationship as a single step away from making them a top-tier couple. Watching Ian grapple with the anguish of losing Poppy slowly to Storm and then her pregnancy provided additional depth to an already intense season for the MQ protagonists. Their back-and-forth was difficult to witness, truthfully, because they are each other’s counterpart.
The truth of the matter is that, like life, things don’t always work out the way people think, and given that Nicdao herself confirmed to Decider that this was never the plan, I think that just makes me love it more. Poppy and Ian may not have had this kiss if it wasn’t for her unplanned pregnancy with Storm, her nearly moving halfway around the world, and her, albeit briefly, trying to leave MQ. It’s what makes this moment feel right and not contrived, in my humble opinion as a TV person and just a massive Mythic Quest fan.
As for what is ahead, I’m not sure. Better yet, the way that Poppy and Ian stepped back from each other before the credits began to roll makes me think they are similarly in the dark about what comes next. And, to me, that is the most exciting part because it lays the groundwork for an incredible potential Season 5 storyline.
I guess what I’m trying to say is: Boo hoo, haters, it’s a good day for romance lovers and especially anyone fond of the “friends but also enemies but also business partners to lovers” genre. Wait, is that a trope? It should be.
