Top Iranian negotiator arrives in Pakistan after regime skipped peace talks and Trump canceled his team's trip

ISLAMABAD — On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made a return to Islamabad, having previously left Pakistan’s capital without convening with U.S. officials the prior day, as confirmed by both Pakistani and Iranian sources.

This development occurs amidst Pakistan’s intensified efforts to revive U.S.-Iran peace negotiations, following President Trump’s unexpected cancellation of the American delegation’s scheduled visit to Islamabad on Saturday.

The cancellation unfolded swiftly after Araghchi and his Iranian team departed for Oman without meeting with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were originally set to arrive in Pakistan on the same day.

During their visit to Muscat, the Iranian delegation engaged with Omani officials, discussing various matters, including the possibility of new peace proposals, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

In the backdrop of these events, Pakistani mediators, Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, had already conferred with the Iranian delegates prior to their Saturday departure. They are now expected to hold further discussions with Araghchi upon his return.
