Will There A ‘Forever’ Season 2 On Netflix? Here’s Why There’s Hope For Keisha And Justin

The ending of Netflix’s new series Forever is bittersweet and likely not what most viewers were expecting. Now, many fans are wondering if there will be a Season 2 of Forever to continue Keisha and Justin’s story into adulthood. Despite being released as a limited series, here’s why there’s still hope for a second chapter.

Forever is a reimagining of Judy Blume’s 1975 novel of the same name. The Netflix series follows two Black teens, Keisha (Lovie Simone) and Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.), as they explore their identities through the awkward journey of being each other’s “firsts” in life.

“All the questions we have to sort through – the first time you have sex, your first kiss, the first time you say ‘I love you’ – it resonated then, and it resonates now,” showrunner Mara Brock Akil told Tudum of the shared themes between the show and Blume’s book. In their last year of high school, the young athletes fall in love against the backdrop of figuring out what they want to do post-grad.

The eight-episode series changes several details from the original novel, including shifting the setting from 1970s suburban New Jersey to sun-soaked Los Angeles in 2018 – a world now shaped by social media.

“Ultimately, I just wanted a love story — an epic, intimate love story — within a love letter to Los Angeles that really [you feel like] you just want to hug all of our children, of every race and background,” Brock Akil told Parade. “They belong to us, and we need to make room for them.”

Will There Be A Season 2 Of Forever On Netflix?

Netflix has not yet renewed Forever for a second season. Although it was originally billed as a limited series, the cast and crew remain hopeful that Season 2 could still happen.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Brock Akil said there’s “absolutely room” for a second season. “In this art form, I don’t make it for myself. I’m making it for an audience. I believe that the audience wants character-driven, complex love stories. If the audience wants more, I want more. Let’s go do it.”

Cooper Jr., who plays Justin, echoed a similar sentiment to Us Weekly when asked about the possibility of a second season. “I think that depending on how it’s received, we may be able to come back for season 2,” he said.

“I think [showrunner] Mara [Brock Akil] is in the works of writing some things for season 2,” he continued. “We never know. But that’s something that I’m hopeful for his journey to go that way. So we’ll see.”

Simone, who stars as Keisha, would also like to see more episodes beyond Season 1’s limited run, though she noted that its ending offers a “mature ”and natural stopping point for the high school couple ready to begin their adult lives.

“I would love to see what [Keisha] turns into. I would love to see what she would teach me. [But] I liked that ending also because even if it’s not the end forever, it was a very mature stopping point for the both of them,” she also told Us Weekly. “I feel like they were in places in their lives where they said, ‘Hey, maybe this is not going to be helpful for the things that I have to consider and do for myself in this portion of my life.’”

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Forever Season 2 on Netflix.

How Does Forever Season 1 End?

By the end of Forever Season 2, Keisha and Justin decide to break up. Although the decision is painful, it’s also mutual. Keisha is headed to Howard University, while Justin deferred from Northwestern to pursue his passion for music.

They reunite one last time to say goodbye and thank each other before Keisha leaves for college. “If it weren’t for you, I’d still be locked in a life that wasn’t mine,” Justin tells her in their last farewell. “Maybe we’ll be ready for each other in 10 years.”

Brock Akil defended the controversial ending and the decision for the couple’s breakup. “What I love about the ending and the complexity is that love is intact,” Brock Akil told Entertainment Weekly. “Though they broke up to go their separate ways to embrace more of who they are, they did it in love.”

If Keisha and Justin each other out again – perhaps in a potential second season on Netflix – the showrunner said “it will be love.”

“I’m really excited about young people showing all of us the way in terms of how to transition from relationships without it having to be destructive. We don’t need any more of that,” Brock Akil said. Stay tuned for updates on Forever Season 2.
