Suspect in Jacksonville shooting located in Orlando

Sergio Espada is accused of fatally shooting the victim after they were involved in a fight and then driving away.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Authorities found the suspect involved in the April 18 shooting on New Kings Road in Orlando, four days following the incident, as reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Sergio Espada, 23, was transferred to the Duval County Jail Monday.

He is accused of shooting and killing 22-year-old Killian Barnette.

The JSO indicated that officers responded to a call on April 18 about an individual who had been shot. Barnette was discovered on the street with a gunshot wound to his torso and was quickly transported to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives reviewed evidence and found two key witnesses, who identified the shooter, JSO said.

Witnesses informed the police that the two men were involved in a physical altercation. Subsequently, Espada retrieved a gun and shot Barnette once in the torso before fleeing the scene, according to JSO.

He was found and detained in Orlando last Tuesday.

He was transferred back to Jacksonville Monday and is now in the Duval County Jail.

“We’ll continue to work closely with the State Attorney’s Office to bring justice to Barnette’s loved ones,” JSO said.
