Mats Hummels has taken to social media to complain about the penalty awarded against him during Borussia Dortmund’s score draw at PSV Eindhoven.

Former PSV player Donyell Malen put the visitors in front during the first half of the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie, but after the break came a controversial penalty call.

Following a quick break from the hosts, Hummels slid in to try and dispossess Malik Tillman – before the German caught the defender on the ankle with his follow-through, leading to a penalty being awarded by Srdan Jovanovic.

Hummels wrote: ‘Twitter waits for it. Twitter gets it. What a joke of a penalty against us. Again! I cannot believe there can be decisions like today or against Chelsea or PSG with the VAR.’

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, pundit Glen Hoddle agreed that the decision was harsh – and felt the 50-50 call should have been reviewed on the monitors.

Hoddle said: ‘He touches the ball for me, he gets the ball there. It’s a little bit of follow-through that brings Tillman down. And that’s where the referee’s angle is.

‘I think he should be sent to the screens to have a little look himself.’

Fellow TNT pundit Joleon Lescott agreed, adding: ‘I don’t think anyone should be making the decision for him.

‘This one [angle], it didn’t look like there’s any contact. He looks like he’s tried to jump and avoid him. I definitely feel he touches enough of the ball for that not to be a penalty.

‘I think if he looks at other angles, he may see it a different way.’
