Jaren Jackson needs procedure after agreeing to Grizzlies contract

The Grizzlies have disclosed that Jaren Jackson Jr. will undergo a procedure to fix an injury on his right foot. This announcement came on Tuesday, shortly after it was revealed that he had signed a five-year contract extension worth $240 million.

Jackson, age 25, experienced a turf toe injury during an off-site “live basketball run,” as per the team’s statement.

An evaluation on Monday revealed that it would require a procedure to repair it.

“Further information and an initial recovery timeline will be shared post-procedure, yet Jackson Jr. is anticipated to fully recover,” the Grizzlies stated.

Jackson is a crucial part of the Grizzlies’ roster, and losing him for any period of time will likely hurt Memphis, which is already planning on starting the 2025-26 season without Zach Edey after he underwent a procedure on his left ankle.

Jackson, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, is viewed highly by the Grizzlies, who included a player option for the 2029-30 season in his new deal.

He will be one of the franchise’s leaders — along with Ja Morant — going forward.

Jackson had averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals per game last season and has made two NBA All-Star appearances in his seven seasons with the Grizzlies, who drafted him with the fourth overall pick in 2018.

ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news of Jackson’s newly renegotiated and extended contract on Monday evening.

Jackson was entering the final year of his current contract with the Grizzlies this upcoming season.

The Grizzlies are coming off a 2024-25 season in which they went 48-34 for a second-place finish in the Southwest Division before getting swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Thunder.
